Whales

Student Response
It was a nice crisp day for our first day at the Whale Side Hotel and Resort. Today we were going to go on a boat and try to spot some marine life. Every one wondered why our hotel was called the Whale Side Hotel because no body had seen a whale in the last 50 years. I was so excited that when I woke up I literally jumped out of bed. I was ready to go. Even though it was summer it was pretty cold considering we were in Canada. I put on a long sleeve shirt and a jacket then went to the dock with my family.
When we got to the dock were the boat would depart we got told safety rules like don’t touch any sea life and don’t stand up while the boat while the boat was moving. Finally the safety speech was done and we could go on the boat. The boat was a small boat that by the looks of it seamed that it could only fit 5 people. when we got on we realized that there was a complete under deck space where you could see underneath the water. I thought that was pretty cool. We decided that we should go beneath deck into the bottom section of the boat because the view from the top of the boat was not as good.
Leaving the dock was very bumpy. The boat kept on hitting the bottom of the boat making it uncomfortable and outrageously noisy. After 10 minutes every thing was nice and quite. We stared out the windows waiting hopefully that we would see something. We waited for a while and then, a brown figure formed as it swam past the window of our boat. The sea lion swam up to our window and licked it leaving a giant slobber mark. Quickly after that the sea lion swam away.
We waited for just about an hour before something bumped into the boat. My family and I ran up to the top deck and looked out into the ocean. Suddenly the creature that bumped into us sprang up and out of the water making an immense splash. We had just saw a whale. Whales were never seen here because they usually were out hunting during this time of day, it was odd. As the whale was in the air it flipped its tail and dove straight into the water. The people who were with us were astonished. They had their mouths open in awe. The whole boat was silent.
The captain of the ship turned on his speaker and said “You have just seen something that people in the past 50 years have not seen here. This whale that you just saw was probably about 78 feet long and weighed probably 56 tons. You are very lucky.”
When we got back to the hotel, there was a strange crowd on the beach. My family and I ran over to see what was all the commotion about. When we got to the beach we found out that a whale had beached itself and was drying out. We were told that the Coast Guard at the beach tried to lift it up with standard sized nets but it did not work. I looked at the animal. It looked so sad. Suddenly a giant claw came down from a helicopter. It went to go grab the whale but missed. It tried again but failed. Finally on the claws third attempt the claw picked up the whale and brought it safely to the ocean. Everybody on the beach applauded as the whale safely made it to the ocean.
Once we got to the hotel room we got ready for dinner. All I could think about was who amazing my first day of vacation. I wondered what would happen tomorrow.
