We drive everyday. Back and forth, back and forth. Whether it’s to school or to work, or to a fancy restaurant for your grandma’s birthday, or you’re just driving home, we are always on the road. Driving is a basic necessity for life. A persons success depends on their ability to travel. Littered roads make driving difficult, dangerous, and unpleasant. Any school with the chance to help its community should want to clean the roads and highways. This is why Muirlands Middle School should adopt a highway.
It is no secret that trash is terrible for the environment. The safety of widlife and the danger of pollution are two contstant issues on a naturlist’s mind, however it is also a problem that all people should recognize. According to “Keep Our Roadsides Beautiful”, “Today, there are more than 4 million miles of roads and streets in the United States.” It is almost garunteed that each one of them has litter on it. We should all do our part to clean the roads and make the lives of other innocent animals easier and safer.
Beauty belongs to all the people,” says President Johnson. Like I said earlier, most people use roads every day of their lives.
Source #1 says, “Drivers and passengers can enjoy mile after scenic mile of grass, trees, waterways, farms, forests, wildflowers, and wildlife,” but this is not possible if these scenic miles are cluttered with cans, bags, and other types of disgusting junk. Source #1 also states, “Many Americans love to drive for sightseeing, vacations, and relaxation.” However, it is quite aggreeable that driving is not always a choice, afterall many people wouldn’t want to drive to work at 7:00 AM on a Sunday, so why not make this drive enjoyable. Watching plastic and cardboard alike roll down the highway is not a sight that can raise someones spirits. Cleaning the roads would make people a lot of people happy.
Adopting a highway is an amazing idea for a school’s community sevice project, why not let it be ours! The “Adopt-a-Highway” program encourages volunteers to take care of and clean a highway. In return, these volunteers get a sign posted along the roadway with their name on it. I believe that this program would be extremely educatioinal and exciting for students from our school. Participation in this porgram will result in awareness of the increasing pollution and the importance of recycling and disposing of trash properly.
Adopting a highway would be a great oppurtunity and a fantastic educational oppurtunity for students. Community service should help the community, and all people would benefit from some new clean roadways. I hope that you will understand, Principal Klein, that adopting a highway is the right thing for our community and our campus.
