Look into your backyard. You may see a vegetable garden, fruit trees, flower bushes, or just grass. Did you know that at least one plant in your backyard is not native to where you are living? It’s true! Most non-native species go wild and take over the area, earning themselves the title of invader. These invasive species can do a lot of damage to native species and the environment. Not all non-native species are bad, though. Some are good and useful. In this essay I will tell you about the invaders, and the good new-comers.

Non-native plants can be harmful to the native plant-life. For one, they can crowd out the native plants. If the invasive species is fast-growing, they can easily spread and take over a vast amount of land swiftly. Secondly, the animals that rely on the native plants for food may also suffer if there are not enough of those plants. If their main food source is taken out, the animals or insects could die, or have to move to a new home(Article 1). This can affect the entire food web in that area. Thirdly, if there are enough non-native plants, diversity between species could be reduced. Invasive species must be kept in check so that they do not upset the natural balance of the world(Article 1).Now you can see the many ways non-native plants can harm Earth’s ecosystems.

But, not all non-native plants are invasive and try to take over. Of course, one you might not know is the tomato. Believe it or not, the tomato originates from South America, but has slowly become the world’s most popular fruit(Article 4). Next, potatoes, chili peppers, and sweet potatoes came from South America too(Article 4). These crops are grown and harvested all around the world. Continuing on, English ivy, tulips, irises, oranges, wheat, and apples are grown in many places where they did not originate from(Article 1). Many of these are very popular among all the world. As you now know, not all non-native plants are invasive.

In this essay I have taught you that many plans around the world are invasive and must be controlled. I also showed you that many popular crops and fruits that are non-native are good, healthy, and delicious. Next time you look out into your backyard, or go hiking in the woods, or go to the ocean try to see how many non-native-friendly or invasive-plants that you can find. I bet that there are more than you thought!
